Education

‘Springfield Road Children’s Home Ltd’ place a very high importance to young people’s education. We believe that the young people in our care should have access to the same educational opportunities as their peers; however, we are aware that most of them have been exposed to educational experiences that have left them with low self-esteem and extended periods of time without appropriate provision.

So, this is one of our primary aims in their Placement Plan, to motivate, and then encourage and support a young person to engage in their Personal Education Plan which will target their specific needs.

Our expectation is that they will attend an educational placement. This could be with a wide range of specialist services provided by the LEA that are more vocational based or work related skills, in addition to the School or a Pupil Referral Unit choice. There are also main stream schools in the local area if required.

Some of our young people attend HEADSTART School which is situated in the East Sussex countryside on the outskirts of the village of Ninfield. The school itself is based in 18 acres of farm land and offers a broad range of vocational lessons alongside the more conventional areas of academic study.

Places are available for students from age 7 to 16 and following onto Post 16 courses up to the age of 18 who have found the environment of conventional schooling difficult to manage and so become disaffected. Provision is also available for students diagnosed on the autistic spectrum; those with ADHD and other associated learning difficulties.

They promote educational and social progress for all, and this is achieved through their high ratio of staff to students, which is often based on 1:1.

The key principles underlying the HEADSTART curriculum are those of breadth, balance and relevance. These three principles are ensured, by offering a broad curriculum and tailoring it to each student’s individual needs.
